SOME UNUSUAL FRUITS
Mangosteen
A fragrant tropical fruit about the size of a small orange, mangustaan’s
leathery purple-maroon shell surrounds a moist, snow-white and sweet
fleshy interior. Though it is the national fruit of Thailand, it is
believed that the trees of this fruit used to flourish in southern India
throughout the 18th century. Mellow and earthy, mangustaan is similar to mango in taste and is completely ripe only when its woody, leathery purple rind yields to the touch.
Grown in: The Nilgiri hills, the southern districts of Tirunelvely and Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
2. Star fruit or Carambola
The
fruit has a waxy outer appearance and is extremely citric. It is so
sour that you will wince once or twice with the first bite. My mouth
just waters after seeing it or on hearing someone call it's name.
It
is largely grown in South India and in North India, especially in Delhi
and Punjab, you can find sellers on streets selling it with some lime
and chat masala along with sweet potato.
Whenever I go back home, this is the first thing I eat.
Oh God, my mouth is watering again!
3. Buddha’s Hand or Fingered Citron
It looks like a large lemon with yellow elongated tentacles, has a zesty taste and is very fragra
nt. Scholars believe it was carried by Buddhist Monks to China from India.
It is grown mostly in Northeastern India
